Review - Hostel Ani & Haakien
I have stayed in a lot of hostels in my 22 years, and I honestly think this one is my favorite! It is certainly not the most luxurious or fanciest - but the staff are so welcoming, the owners are so genuine and kind, and the vibe and sense of community is overwhelming. Brooke and I loved it so much that we actually spent much of our time in Rotterdam relaxing in the backyard on the hammocks and couches with the other guests.
We stayed in an 8 bed, mixed dorm. It wasn't too big or too small - there was just enough room for all of us. We were in Rotterdam in the off season in March, but our room was still full every night. Definitely a sign of how awesome it is! The room had small lockers available, but we didn't even feel the need to lock up our stuff. There were sinks and showers in the hallway and a few bathrooms on each floor. It is not a huge hostel, so the shared showers are perfectly fine.
Dowstairs, there is a huge common room with lots of space to hangout, cook food, and meet new people. There are a few different sections that make up the big common area. The kitchen is spacious and well stocked with a long communal table. It was so fun to sit at one big table with all of the other guests every morning at breakfast and exchange travel stories. There is also an area with big, comfy couches, a book shelf stocked with books, and a few guitars. It is everything you could ever want from a small, non-chain hostel.
They really try to foster a sense of community at this hostel. They have dinners and different night-time events you can attend for a few bucks and they have pancake breakfasts once a week as well. They also have bikes you can rent for the day for really cheap - and I definitely recommend doing it! We had so much fun exploring Rotterdam by bike. As you can tell, I really love everything about this hostel. It embodies the quintisential idea of what a hostel should be. And they have a cat! Please stay here!
