Crazy About Clarendon
Brooke and I recently spent a weekend in Northern Virginia visiting my brother. We had a lot of fun exploring Washington DC, which you can read about here, but we also had time to check out the nightlife in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, VA.
Neither one of us knew anything about this neighborhood, but it had been recommended to us by some trustworthy sources. We decided to take the plunge and googled the names of a few bars. After at least an hour of getting ready (I blame Brooke), we hopped in the car. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived in Clarendon. Being from New Jersey, I did not have high hopes for the nightlife in Virginia (sorry, VA followers!) but Clarendon was a trendy neighborhood that was just coming to life at around 10 pm.
We easily found free parking and headed off to our first stop, Galaxy Hut. Galaxy Hut is known for their extensive craft beer selection with 28 taps that are constantly changing. We headed in to sample a few.
The atmosphere was very casual with dim lighting and mismatched tables. We noticed right away that the place was filled with mostly couples, but this was no issue for us since we often pretend to dating when necessary. We made our way to the back and found seats at the bar.
The prices and serving sizes are modest which allows you to try plenty of the beers of the long menu. I had a glass of their Raspberry Sour Wit and was pleasantly surprised. I am not that knowledgeable about craft beer, but Brooke is. She sampled a few beers and, even as a harsh critic, was happy with the selection.
After we finished our beers we decided we wanted to find a place that was more upbeat. We both love to dance and socialize so we were looking for livelier place. We made our way over a few blocks and stumbled upon Spider Kelly's. The velvet ropes guiding the line halfway down the block made us feel more at home (like we were at our favorite bars in NYC). We quickly got in and immediately knew it was going to be a good time.
The space was huge with couches in the front, a bar in the middle, and shuffle boards and a dance floor towards the back. We made our way outside where we found another bar, lots of seating, and even a fire pit!
We got drinks and made our way back inside. We hung out by the shuffleboard tables and ended up talking to a group of guys in suits (of course). The music was good, the crowd was fun, and the prices were reasonable. Spider Kelly's felt like an urban oasis in the middle of otherwise low key NoVa. We agreed that we would definitely return.
Around 2 AM, the bar started to quiet down and our stomachs started to grumble. We walked out of the bar and, like a scene out of any Jersey girl's dream, there was a flashing "Open" sign for a diner across the street. We practically skipped over to it. Silver Diner is completely hormone free and organic, and out chicken fingers were delicious. We also enjoyed scrolling through all the old songs on the jukebox. We finished our food and made our way back to the car.
Overall we really enjoyed our night in Clarendon! There are endless bars and clubs to explore and it is definitely worth the visit.
